For a local day trip, decide who drives, who carries the costumes and where your group will meet. For an interstate visit, compare the whole journey from airport to accommodation to the venue. Check your return arrangements as carefully as your arrival: a provisional event date does not tell you when your last presentation will finish.

Once the running order is released, give accompanying family a simple version containing your event numbers, meeting point and contact person. This is particularly useful when one person manages younger dancers while another watches or photographs. Make the competition bag easy to move so your group is not relying on leaving valuables at an unattended seat.

Choose entries before building the training schedule

When the new syllabus appears, read it with your teacher before selecting events. Check the dance combinations, age division, registration requirements and any restrictions for your category. Competition names alone do not establish that the programme will be identical from one year to the next.

Build a short rehearsal around what you actually intend to enter. Include the walk onto the floor, the transition between dances and a reset after an imperfect start. If two partners have different ideas about who carries the number or checks recalls, settle that in practice. Those small decisions are much easier to make before the venue becomes busy.

For several styles, pack complete changes together instead of separating everything by item type. A labelled pouch for each outfit can make a short turnaround easier. Keep an additional layer and comfortable footwear accessible for breaks, and plan food and water around your own familiar routine and the venue's current conditions.

Give your shoes a full rehearsal

Test shoes with the costume and hosiery you will compete in. If a heel height or shape is changing, discuss the choice with your teacher and practise in it early; a comfortable fitting alone does not show how a new pair will feel through a full round. Before packing, check fastenings, heel tips and any protectors required by the organiser. Keep dance shoes separate from outdoor footwear. Follow the venue's floor-care rules rather than adding substances to soles or the competition floor.
